Transmission Service

The fluid the dealer calls "lifetime" — and why it isn't.

The ZF 8HP automatic transmission ships in most modern BMWs, Audis, Jaguars, and Land Rovers. The DSG dual-clutch ships in most VWs, Audis, and Porsches. Both are excellent transmissions. Both will outlast the rest of the car — if the fluid is serviced.

The dealer will tell you the fluid is "lifetime." That phrase has a specific manufacturer meaning: the fluid is rated to last the defined service life of the transmission, often 80,000–100,000 miles. After that, the additive package breaks down, the friction modifiers degrade, and the transmission starts shifting harder. A fluid-and-filter service at 60,000–80,000 miles will add another 100,000 miles to its life.

What transmissions do you service?

ZF 8HP
BMW, Audi, Jaguar/Land Rover. Pan-drop, filter, fluid-temp-method fill.
ZF 6HP
Older BMW, Audi. Same procedure; valve-body sleeves often need replacement at high mileage.
DSG (6-speed DQ250, 7-speed DQ200/DQ500)
VW, Audi. Fluid and filter on a 40,000-mile interval.
PDK
Porsche dual-clutch. Specific fluid and procedure; 40,000-mile interval.
Manual
Clutch replacement, transmission fluid change. We use OE-spec MT gear oil.

Pricing

ZF 8HP service runs $385–$475 depending on platform. DSG service runs $350–$420. Manual fluid service is $145–$180. Clutch replacement varies widely by car — call us with your VIN for an accurate quote.

Doesn't my transmission have "lifetime fluid"?

The ZF 8HP, the ZF 6HP, the Aisin TR-80, and most modern European automatics are sold to the customer as having "lifetime fluid." That phrase has a specific meaning: the fluid is rated to last the manufacturer's defined service life of the transmission, often 80,000–100,000 miles. After that, the fluid breaks down and the transmission shifts harder, banging into gear. A pan-and-filter service at 60,000–80,000 miles will add another 100,000 miles of clean shifting to the transmission's life.

Frequently asked questions

Do you do full flushes or just drain-and-fill?

Both, depending on the platform. ZF 8HP gets a pan-drop and filter, fluid level set with the temperature method (the only correct way — no dipstick on these transmissions). DSG gets a fluid-and-filter service. We do not do power-flushes on most platforms — the agitation can dislodge debris that then circulates through the valve body.

My transmission is shifting hard. Does it need rebuilding?

Usually not. The most common cause of hard shifts on ZF 8HP is the mechatronic sleeves leaking, which is a $1,200–$1,600 repair. We diagnose first; rebuild is the rarest outcome.

My check engine and "transmission" light are both on. What's happening?

The transmission control module has logged a fault. Could be a speed sensor, a solenoid, a clutch-wear value, or a software issue. Bring it in for diagnosis — $145, applied toward repair.
